The National Human Development Report 1995

The Government of Uzbekistan has undertaken a gradual, step-by-step transition to a new economy and maintained extensive policies of social protection of its citizens. While the first few years of the transition have been marked by difficulties, the Government has been able to protect people from bearing the full brunt of recessionary conditions. According to key indicators Uzbekistan has a relatively high level of human development compared with its level of income. This is a strong foundation upon which to base future economic growth. The 1995 NHDR is the first major review of the status and challenges in the areas affecting prospects of human development during the transition period in Uzbekistan.
